6 Types Of Coffee Tables To Perfect Your Living Room Layout

The coffee table is the centerpiece of the living room. It’s often what draws our eyes because there it is, smack-dab in the middle of everything. It’s also the workhorse of the home (after countertops, that is). So there are two qualifications that a coffee table must fill. And those are…you guessed it – function and style. You might be able to compromise on other things in your home, but the coffee table is one of those things that has to be just right. It has to be the correct size, shape, and color. And it definitely has to make you happy.

Choosing a coffee table

The tricky thing about coffee tables is that there’s no universally “right” type or style. It’s not like choosing a dining room table, where most people gravitate toward the rectangle style that fits as many people as possible. Choosing a coffee table depends solely on your furniture and how your room is set up.

We can give you one rule to keep in mind, however. Your coffee table should never be longer than your sofa. A good length to shoot for is two-thirds of the length of the sofa (or up to three-fourths).

Let’s take a look at six different types of coffee tables you could use to take your living room to the next level.

#1 Wood coffee tables

Right now, wood is an essential part of any given interior design trend, and what better way to incorporate it than this? Wood coffee tables are made to fit a variety of tastes. They can be raw and rustic, or they can feature intricately turned legs and a glossy finish for a more refined look. This chunky, sturdy, DIY farmhouse coffee table by Shanty-2-Chic proves that a great coffee table doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, either.

#2 Metal coffee tables

Metal is sturdy. No argument there. It’s also perfect for a minimalist home. No matter the style, metal coffee tables always give you those clean lines minimalists drool over. Granted, if your home style is traditional, French country, or elegant in any way, black metal or chrome may not be what you’re looking for. But don’t forget copper, gold, and brass as possibilities. Right now round metal coffee tables are hot, especially in boho design circles. And the best thing about metal? It can be paired with almost any material – wood, glass, concrete – to create an even more eye-catching table.

#3 Marble coffee tables

Marble is often paired with metal, so if you loved tip #2 above, you may already have marble factored into your coffee table plans. Still, marble is such big trend in its own right that it deserves its own section. Love your marble countertops? Or wish you had the budget for a whole kitchen of marble counters but know that’s just not possible? An elegant marble coffee table may be perfect for you!

#4 Rattan coffee tables

Not only are they all-natural, but they’re also easy to move around if you need flexibility in your space. Though largely associated with boho or urban style, rattan can add uniqueness and texture to any space. Plus, these tables come in a variety of styles and weaves to make your choice that much more interesting.

#5 Nesting coffee tables

Nesting coffee tables are all the rage at the moment, and for good reason. Nesting coffee tables usually come in sets, but no one says you can’t mix and match! What makes a coffee table a nesting coffee table? Well, with nesting coffee tables, two or three tables usually come in a set, and each table varies in height. This allows you to “nest” the tables (placing them inside or under each other), creating more space for walking around during the day and giving everyone access to a surface in the evening (when it’s time for a party, movie night, game night, etc.).

It’s almost as if nesting coffee tables were created just for mobile homes! They’re perfect for small spaces where permanent side tables or large coffee tables are out of the question.

#6 Ottoman…coffee tables?

Leather tufted ottoman

That’s right, ottomans are a two-in-one! Just slap a tray (or two) on an ottoman and you’ve got yourself a coffee table. Whenever you like, put the trays away and relax with your feet up. We think this is another perfect choice for the inevitably smaller mobile home living room. Instead of investing in two pieces of furniture that will take up double the space, save money and frustration by combining their functions.

What makes your coffee table unique?

Whether your coffee table is big, small, ornate, or rustic, it’s a crucial piece in your living room. Choose well. We hope these tips have inspired you to think outside the box when selecting your coffee tables! And if you’re also looking for tips on choosing your dining table, we’ve got you covered.
